WOW! What an amazing story of fate. While the war time stories are tough to digest at times, this was a real page-turner. The writing was excellent as it alternated narration from the two soldiers, I was completely engaged in each chapter. Truly a fabulous book, amazing story and ultimately hopeful message of kindness and connection.
I am an avid reader but hardly ever review books (feels too much like homework). I absolutely loved this book. Bored with the fictional thrillers I used to read I started reading a lot of biographies and memoirs. I love reading about the experiences of others, in America and in other countries I have virtually no knowledge of (except for what I see in the news). It is eye opening.
This book, in particular, sucked me in nearly from the beginning. Reading about life in Iran and Iraq was interesting and I couldn't wait to find out what happened next to the two narrators. While those two things were the hook and line, the sinker was their writing style. I can be a bit picky about that and have quit many books for this reason alone. I loved their writing style so much I searched both their names on to see if they had written any more books (there are no more, at least on ).
The book is just amazing, though haunting and also disturbing at times. Normally I would be searching for my next book by now but I feel I need to give this one time to settle, if that makes sense. I can tell you I didn't want it to end.

This book really opened my perspective on life. It was well crafted and the real life characters were alive on each page. It reviled the harshness of life and the absolute stupidly of war. It personalized the reasons why people joined the conflict and surprisingly it was not because they were religious zelots. With all the ugliness of war, human kindness and hope shine through. Read this book. You will be glad you did.
Author Meredith May has written a moving portrayal of two men whose lives were forever altered by the experience, trauma, and horror of war...a protracted armed conflict that claimed countless lives including innocent men, women and children. This book evoked so many emotions as Zahed & Najah delved into their lives and the unimaginable conditions that they had endured and would ultimately survive. There were some tender moments when the men spoke of their loves, their families and their lives in Iraq & Iran, respectively. Some levity was brought to this gripping story as well as the men recounted some humorous times when life was "normal" before the war heated up. In the end I really felt like I had come to know these two remarkable human beings and the kinship that will serve as a bond for the rest of their lives. Author May did a superb job of presenting the reader with a skillful and eloquent account of both Zahed Haftlang and Najah Aboud and the critical moment that brought them together. Highly recommended!
What makes men survive years of torture as prisoners of war? What keeps them going when life is at its darkest? What lessons can you as the reader take from their journeys? One of the best books i read in a long time!!!
Horrific, humanity, hope, heartwarming. I never would normally read a book on this topic but I saw the story I the news and knew I had to. I was not disappointed! Although the information I learned was hard to digest, it's the for the two men, a truth that I am grateful they shared in such detail. I am glad I knew the backstory before going on however as it gave me hope for the ending. Overall, an unforgettable story.
An unbelievable story of humans' indomitable spirit that seeks to survive despite the chaos and brutality they are immersed in.
What makes this book singularly compelling is that it tells the story of two men as fully fleshed-out individuals with stories about their families, their first loves, their school days, and how they had to endure a winding path through a violent conflict that was not something they either one believed in, cared about, or even wanted to participate in. But nonetheless, they found themselves in the midst of a raging war, and they each were compelled to survive.
In theory, they were enemies, but in reality, they were just two men born at the wrong time in the wrong place and therefore got sucked into a pointless war that raged on for eight years achieving nothing.
The book is a page turner because everything that happens in their lives is so amazing and foreign, yet the men themselves could be your neighbor or your brother, because their hopes and dreams really are that familiar. You really get a sense of their character and their canny ability for survival. And each man has a love that he wants to remain alive for, a love that drives them to do what they can to survive so that they can get back home.
In the heat of battle, one of them saves the other, and that act is critical to each man but for different reasons. For the saved, naturally it saves his life, which gives him the opportunity to carry-on. And for the savior, it was an act that would help him remember he was a human and worthy of redemption himself, despite the acts he committed as a soldier.
It really is an astonishing read.
