The Cat Who Lost His Meow

Angela Muse has written a charming story in verse about Chester, a calico cat. Chester lost his voice and, after much searching, found it at last. This story has a good lesson to teach us as well. Beautifully illustrated by Helen H. Wu, the book is sure to intrigue young children.

Our pet cats can be comforting and great companions. On the other hand, some of them keep their distance and are cool and remote. Chester, in this story, is rather remote and keeps to himself.

The story:
Chester the calico cat liked to watch birds, eat food and nap on a fancy bed. Actually, he was rather lazy. Often he would just sit on the windowsill and look at the birds out the window. He was rather spoiled and would meow a protest (a “cat roar”) if his food arrived just a little bit late. He thought that all of these amenities, food, soft bed, the lazy bird watching, were his due, of course.

One day he noticed his food bowl was empty. When he tried to do his little “cat roar” or meow, no sound came out. His owner didn’t notice his predicament, so Chester began searching by himself for his lost meow.

He looked around his food bag, his bed and even his smelly litter box, but he could not find his meow. Then he got up his courage and went outside. He looked in the mailbox and the garden, and then he began climbing up a tall tree.

A problem arose when he looked down from the top of that tree: Chester was afraid to come down. He realized how foolish he had been to climb such a tall tree. Chester said a prayer and slowly ventured down the tree. When he reached the ground, he opened his mouth, found his voice and said, “MEOW”.

Happy to be safe and back on the ground, Chester realized how lucky he was to have such a comfortable home. No longer remote, he became a friendly, affectionate cat and a good companion.

The lesson:
There is a lesson here that both children and adults can learn. After his frightening climb down the tall tree, Chester learned to appreciate what he had and not take his comfortable life for granted. So should we all be grateful for what we have.

This story is definitely cute. Something worth reading to your children! Great goodnight story book. Teaches kids a great lesson!
Really good book that teaches the lesson of appreciation. My kids love this book and learned that the official cat of Maryland is the Calico.
The Cat Who Lost His Meow is a very sweet, short story about a Calico Cat Who one day couldn't meow. My grandchildren loved it.
Cute book overall, but it would be hard to read aloud to a child because the rhyming lines do not have a consistent rhythm. I understand that there was supposed to be a moral, but it was kind of a stretch. Glad it was a freebie.
Wonderful book. I have three cats and they love me so much. They act like this cat sometimes but then they give their love and appreciation back. Wonderful story. Thank you.

"The Cat Who Lost His Meow" is one of the most beautifully illustrated books I've ever seen. Large, colorful pictures animate the pages, bringing the story to life that is told with wonderful rhymes. A terrific message for children on not taking what we have for granted and appreciating life's blessings.

As adults, we often have to remind ourselves to "stop and smell the roses" but if we begin to instill this message in our children at a young age, the message will be internalized and a happier, more grateful person will emerge.

Highly recommended!
