Life is not easy for a stray. Dodging traffic, unfriendly feet and thrown bottles, a frightened and weary little dog scrambles to find nourishment where she can and fights to keep her new litter of vulnerable pups safe from the many perils that linger in Greece's shadows. There is little mercy here. It's a very hard life for a street dog, especially for one who once knew the caring of a Human. Fierce and unforgiving, she barks endlessly at the day's many dangers and keens to the empty darkness of the night, but just as she begins to sink into a despair that only a dog can feel, the red haired girl appears and life begins to change.
It is the spring of 1990. The young American family boards a ferry, traversing the vast Aegean blue into the Greek archipelago in pursuit of four months of sun, sea and adventure ... but just as they begin to settle on an idyllic whitewashed island Eleni, Harry and 12 year old Lily come face to face with the loud, scruffy stray who shatters their peace – and their plans! Of course, tender Lily is drawn to the wild little dog boldly protecting three young pups, and it's in the wake of their very first meeting that trust begins to take the place of fear. The dog, Margarita, claims the family as her own and in turning their attentions to her life on the streets, the plight of the island's cast-off animals comes into a finely tuned focus.
Wedged between the welcoming beauty of sun, sea and antiquity and their ignorance of a culture just recently coming up for air after years of oppression, is the family's love for all animals – and it's their caring for the desperate strays that imposes an unexpected turn on their blissful holiday. While Eleni, Harry and Lily come to lasting friendships with locals and an intimacy with the peace and beauty of their island, they also come face to face with some of the country's darker secrets. Both the light and the dark get distilled down into one grand odyssey – several years along a Grecian path cobbled with utter delight, worries and sorrows and ultimately, with redemption. Along the way they fall deeply in love, with little Margarita ... with the sea and it's gorgeous island cloaked in myth and mystery ... with the people and their vibrant and enigmatic culture ... and with a fisherman, Vassili, who shelters his own secrets and a potent sadness. In the end, favored by all of Margarita's little graces, the beautifully revealing and sometimes painful journey leads not only to the rescue of human hearts, but also toward recognizing and rectifying the lives of the homeless animals of Greece’s streets.

I am not finished with the book -- though I'll probably stay up tonight until it's through -- but wanted to write to applaud this novel. Other reviews have covered the imaginative and unusual plot; and it is an engaging story, right from the first chapter. I am a lover of oral stories; I like going to storytelling festivals because I enjoy listening to a tale being told, and I am able to go deeper in the story with the sound of a storyteller's voice. All The Little Graces is written in such a magical way, I feel as if I AM hearing a storyteller. I linger over some of the lyrical descriptions, and am in awe of how Eleanor MacDonald paints a vivid picture, complete with every colorful detail. As I read and engage with Eleni, Lily and Harry, I can see them; I can smell the ocean, taste the wind, hear the sounds of Greece. Eleanor MacDonald knows how to paint a picture and add sounds to it with her words. There's an enormous amount of heart and art in this book. All The Little Graces is pure love. I shall try to taste each chapter and not consume it too quickly... not sure I'll succeed as it's already got me hooked. (My husband may not appreciate it, however, when I find myself at the Animal Shelter adopting another four-paw though.)Product details

All The Little Graces edition by Eleanore MacDonald Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
All the Little Graces is an enchanting, engaging story of an American family on vacation on a Greek island. This is no ordinary family! This year they bring their young daughter Lily who embodies the endearing magical presence and essence that inhabit innocent children with eyes of wonder and a heart so pure. Life will never be the same in this little fishing village!
With her mother Eleni, they set out to inform and open the minds and hearts of the people in their attitude and treatment of the island's stray dogs and cats. Margarita is the story's protagonist, a feisty little stray that has endured despite desperate conditions.
Written with raw emotion and intelligence; at times earth shattering and heartbreaking, this story engages all the senses. MacDonald writes about the conflicts and complexities of the human spirit governed by tradition and the need to survive, being inspired and stretched through new friendships, and finding the strength and courage to change. MacDonald's lyrical prose awakens the shackles of ignorance, apathy and prejudice and offers not only hope, but also concrete solutions to the plight of our four legged friends. A must read!
This is an amazing little book! It keeps you captivated from beginning to end!
It brings you to the Islands of Greece, and keeps you there for the entire book. This is a wonderful story of both humans and our 4 legged friends. AMAZING AND AWESOME!
Eleanore has such a unique and wonderful way of sharing her words with you. So elegent and sweet.
I highly recommend this book to all readers who are Animal Lovers as well as those that wish to experience Greece without being there!

All The Little Graces ....
I first began reading this book in digital format -- my first experience! -- but it wasn't until I was able to sit back, relaxed in my easy chair with the newly published paper-back edition, that I became immersed in this slice of life story of a very unique family. Harry, Eleni and their 12 year old daughter, Lilly, arrive for an extended summer holiday on an idyllic Greek island with the expectation of a leisurely respite, hoping for renewal and inspiration. Instead they come face to face with Margarita, just one of the many stray dogs trying to survive by staying out of the way of the village locals. Daughter Lilly slowly develops a kinship with the constantly yapping and fearful Margarita which results in a dynamic and heart-warming effect on the towns people and demonstrates her parents' strength of character as they come to understand Lilly's free spirited and unbridled dedication to the unwanted strays crossing her path. An old Greek fisherman, Vassilis, lends richness to the novel and was one of my favorite characters. His story is epic. The book also introduces a number of other people who are genuinely touched by the visiting American family, and in turn help them to understand the Greeks, their history and way of life.
Eleanore MacDonald not only talks the talk - but walks the walk as a staunch animal advocate in her northern California hometown. She writes in a lyrical manner, much like her lovely voice when singing the modern folk music written and performed with her musician husband, Paul Kamm. I heartily recommend this book for young and old alike.
When I read a book & I don't even want to pack a bag, I just want to stick out my thumb & hop the next plane bound for the magical place I can already vividly taste & smell & feel on my skin... I know it's a very special book!
Eleanore MacDonald's "All The Little Graces" has me longing... for Greece, & fishing boats bobbing in blue green waters, & wine & feta & winding cobblestone streets, for letting go & dancing under a moon that always seemed to look back, & for the sweet little brown dog Margerita whom I could picture gazing into my eyes & grinning while her tail wagged like a pendulum!
Eleanore has a gift. For painting life with words. I found myself loving the way she described every scene. Until I could literally smell & see & taste & feel & hear... everything! I fell in love with the people of Greece & the American family who became part of their world through "little graces", little gifts, of hope & life's blessings. I felt the joy & the pain, the struggles & the want to help make a difference. I felt the celebration. I was there!
For those who love life & travel, animals & people who live life until it bursts, "All The Little Graces" is the perfect journey... into grace... & hope... & joy! GET IT, read it, dance it, love it, live it! All The Little Graces
